A Fairfield woman is facing drug charges after a Van Buren County Sheriff’s deputy found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia during a search following her arrest on an outstanding warrant.
Anya George, 44, has been charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance — Second Offense, an Aggravated Misdemeanor, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor.
According to court documents, the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office received multiple reports at approximately 2:15 a.m. on May 24th of a female lying along the shoulder of Highway 16 near Selma. A deputy was dispatched and located George on the shoulder of the roadway. She did not appear to be injured but was visibly distraught and likely impaired. George told the deputy she had left a friend’s residence following a verbal argument and was walking back to Fairfield.
Upon identifying George, the deputy discovered she had an active arrest warrant issued by the Fairfield Police Department and took her into custody. In Jefferson County, she faces charges of Burglary in the Third Degree, a Class D Felony, and Theft in the Third Degree, an Aggravated Misdemeanor.
During a search incident to the arrest, the deputy located a small plastic bag containing a crystalline substance believed to be methamphetamine, a meth pipe with residue, empty baggies, and containers used to hold paraphernalia. The substance was submitted to the Iowa DCI Laboratory, which confirmed it was methamphetamine on July 26th. George has a prior controlled substance conviction from October 3rd, 2008, according to court documents.
The criminal complaint was filed on July 31st and the warrants were served on September 10th. George has been released without bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 24th.
