A Heat Advisory has been issued for portions of central and southern Iowa as hot temperatures and high humidity move into the area.
Heat index values are expected to reach as high as 105 degrees, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Residents are being encouraged to take precautions during the hottest parts of the day. Health officials recommend drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air-conditioned locations when possible and limiting time spent in direct sunlight.
People who must work or exercise outdoors are encouraged to schedule strenuous activities for the early morning or evening hours. Wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing can also help reduce the effects of the heat.
Residents are also being reminded to check on relatives, friends and neighbors who may be especially vulnerable to extreme heat.
Anyone experiencing signs of heat illness should move to a cooler location and seek medical attention if symptoms become severe.
