A heat advisory is in effect across parts of central and south-central Iowa, including the Des Moines metro area, through 7 p.m. Friday.
Heat index values could climb as high as 103 degrees, creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors. The combination of high temperatures and humidity can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids and spend as much time as possible in air-conditioned buildings. Officials also recommend staying out of direct sunlight, wearing lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and limiting strenuous outdoor activities to the early morning or evening hours.
People are also reminded to check on elderly family members, neighbors and others who may be especially vulnerable to the heat.
With temperatures and humidity remaining high, taking precautions can help prevent heat exhaustion and other heat-related illnesses.
