Virginia Fern Hubbard, 97, of Sigourney, IA, formerly of Ottumwa, Iowa, died on August 4, 2026 in Wellington, KS, surrounded by her family in her granddaughter’s home.
She was born on April 30, 1929, in Pony Creek (Glenwood), Iowa, to George Millsap and Laura Fern Reid Millsap.
She married Ergil Lee Hubbard on March 9, 1951, at the Baptist Church in Sedalia, Missouri. Ergil Lee preceded her in death on May, 25, 2010.
Virginia graduated from Fairfax high school in May of 1949. She worked many jobs over the years but was especially proud of her time at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, McCurdy Seed Company, and Pioneer Seed Company near Ottumwa. Virgina and Ergil Lee also owned Hubbard’s Furniture store in Salinas, CA before moving the family to Ottumwa, IA where they reopened Hubbard’s Furniture store on Church street. After closing the store on Church street they built a building on the property where they lived on Mable street and sold antiques. She was a longtime member of East End Christian Church and attended Bible Baptist Church in Ottumwa, where she was baptized. Her faith was her foundation, and she found deep comfort and purpose in her relationship with the Lord.
Virginia loved life, and life loved her right back. She was the life of the party wherever she went—always ready with a warm smile, a hot pot of coffee, and a story to tell. She was an avid gardener, a devoted friend, a great wife and grandma and never turned down a good time. A hot apple pie from McDonald’s on the way, and maybe a strawberry margarita on the rocks for the trip home, were the small joys she delighted in. Virgina’s biggest joys were her grandchildren. She never turned down the opportunity to babysit or spend time with them. Whether it was a phone call from family or a friend who needed a listening ear, Virginia was always there with an open heart.
Surviving are her daughters; Roxanne Hickenbottom (Scott Rose) of Conway Springs, KS, Kim (Brian) Sereg of Sigourney, IA; 4 grandchildren, Michelle (James E.), George, Dylan, Gavin and 5 great grandchildren; Kaylee, Riley, Hayden, Mallory and Audrey; a brother Max Millsap and sister Jean Lynn Curtis. She also leaves behind her beloved cat, Harley, who brought her much comfort and companionship.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Bill Millsap, Rex Millsap, Larry Millsap; sisters, Beth Ann Robinson and Bonnie Long; and son-in-law Gary Hickenbottom.
Her body has been cremated. Family and friends are invited to celebrate her life at the D&E Event Center, located at 502 North Sheridan in Ottumwa, on August 22nd from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to the family.
