The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is giving beginning hunters an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of waterfowl hunting through a hands-on training program in the Indianola area.
The course is designed for people with little or no previous experience hunting waterfowl. Participants will learn about hunting strategies, necessary equipment, identifying places to hunt and safe firearm practices.
Instruction will also cover what happens after the hunt, including how to properly field dress waterfowl and prepare it for cooking.
The one-day course is scheduled for September 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Izaak Walton League near Indianola. The cost is $40, and enrollment is limited.
The program is a cooperative effort involving the Iowa DNR, Iowa Hunter Ed Instructor Association, Delta Waterfowl and the Izaak Walton League of Indianola. Organizers say the course is part of a broader effort to introduce more people to hunting and outdoor recreation.
Those interested in attending are encouraged to register early.
