Iowa Skinner spoke to Brownfield at Becknology Days in Colfax, Iowa on Tuesday:
A regional agronomy manager with Beck’s says red crown rot has been expanding across parts of the Corn Belt.
Jon Skinner tells Brownfield red crown rot is a very aggressive disease that infects soybean roots.
“It was contained in Illinois since 2018 until the last couple years,” he said. “Now we’re starting to see it into Missouri, Iowa, Indiana, and Ohio.”
According to Beck’s research, red crown rot can lead to dramatic soybean yield losses – as much as 40-to-60% in severe cases.
Skinner says it can be difficult to detect.
“It looks a lot like sudden death (syndrome), so I would urge folks that if they think they have sudden death or brown stem rot to go verify that it is that and not the new disease red crown rot because management considerations are drastically different.”
He suggests Beck’s Victrato seed treatment can help manage the disease. Beck’s says Victrato is a Syngenta SDHI fungicide similar to products like ILEVO® and Saltro®, but provides superior defense against red crown rot.
