August 10 marks Agent Orange Awareness Day, an observance that recognizes the lasting effects of Agent Orange exposure on veterans, their families, and civilians affected by its use during the Vietnam War.
Agent Orange was a herbicide used extensively by the U.S. military in Vietnam beginning in the early 1960s to remove dense vegetation that provided cover for enemy forces. The chemical exposure has been linked to a number of serious health conditions, including Type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, multiple myeloma, Parkinson’s disease, respiratory cancers and soft-tissue sarcomas.
The day also serves as an opportunity to remember those who died from illnesses associated with Agent Orange exposure and to recognize veterans who continue to deal with its effects.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs offers resources and assistance for veterans who believe they were exposed to Agent Orange, including health examinations and information about available benefits.
People can observe Agent Orange Awareness Day by learning about its history and effects, visiting a Vietnam memorial, attending a memorial ceremony, lighting a candle in remembrance, or supporting veterans and military organizations.
The date August 10, 1961, is commonly recognized as the beginning of the U.S. use of Agent Orange in Vietnam. Awareness efforts later developed to encourage Vietnam veterans who may have been exposed to seek assistance and medical care.
