A professor of weed science at the University of Illinois says many farmers have faced challenges in terms of weed control this year.
Aaron Hager tells Brownfield, “It’s been all over the board, around the state this year.” He says, “We had some very good timely rainfalls when we were doing a lot of our pre-emergence products. Then we got into some very wet conditions beginning about mid-June, that delayed a lot of the post applications.”
He says it’s not hard to see where the delays have had the biggest impact.
“Take a drive anywhere in the state and come across some very good-looking corn soybean fields.” He says, “And unfortunately, they may be about a mile down the road from something where you have to stop and scratch your head because of all the weeds and wonder, well, what happened here?”
Hager says this season is another example of how weather conditions can alter even the best weed management plans.
