Flood impacts were a key topic during a farmer roundtable in Colfax, Iowa on Friday.
Iowa Ag Secretary Mike Naig tells Brownfield flood waters have caused crop damage in several parts of the state this growing season. Jasper County is one of those areas.
“Pretty wet actually early on and maybe gave them some challenges planting,” Naig said. “They’ve had a couple large rain events, but the challenge has been on some bottom ground.”
USDA Risk Management Agency Administrator Pat Swanson says producers need to quickly report losses to their crop insurance agent.
“There’s different levels of premium that it costs farmers when they do have ground alongside of a river,” Swanson said.
US Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks says addressing flood issues requires looking beyond the farm.
“Looking upstream and in urban areas and what building a development does in urban areas, and how that shifts a rapid influx of water downstream which impacts our farms,” the Congresswoman said.
The roundtable was held at I-80 Farms located a few miles east of Colfax.
