Iowa’s default speed limit on two-lane roads will increase from 55 mph to 60 mph beginning Wednesday, July 1st, and Keokuk County Emergency Management is urging drivers to pay attention to posted signs as the transition takes place, according to a social media post from the agency.
While the speed limit change takes effect July 1st, the process of updating signage across the state will take time. Keokuk County Emergency Management is asking drivers to obey whatever speed limit is currently posted in their area until new or modified signs are in place.
According to the Iowa Department of Transportation and Keokuk County Emergency Management, approximately 1,800 existing 55 mph signs on the state primary roadway system will need to be changed to 60 mph. The initial cost of the sign replacement process is estimated at approximately $270,000. The DOT may incur additional signing and marking costs depending on supplemental analyses of corridor needs.
