After days of unsettled forecasts, the clouds parted and the sun shone over the Keosauqua Municipal Airport (6K9) on Saturday, June 6, creating the perfect backdrop for Fly Van Buren “Freedom Takes Flight,” this year’s aviation celebration honoring America 250 in the Villages
of Van Buren.
There is something special about gathering at a small-town airport on a summer morning. Lawn chairs lined the grass, conversations filled the air, and families looked skyward as aircraft appeared over the rolling hills of southeast Iowa. Pilots and visitors alike came together to celebrate the spirit of aviation, community, and exploration that has long helped shape the American story.
Approximately 25 aircraft flew into Keosauqua throughout the morning, with some pilots traveling more than 75 miles to take part in the event. Visitors enjoyed watching a variety of aircraft arrive and depart while sharing stories, meeting pilots, and experiencing the excitement and curiosity that flight continues to inspire in people of all ages.
The Keosauqua Lions Club served approximately 200 of their famous pancake and sausage breakfasts, bringing together neighbors, visitors, pilots, and aviation enthusiasts for a classic small-town tradition. From the first pancake served to the final aircraft departure, the airport
remained filled with activity and conversation.
The Indian Hills Community College Aviation Department once again joined the event, flying in their training aircraft and sharing information about aviation education opportunities available right here in southeast Iowa. Accompanying the instructor was an instrument student experiencing her first grass runway landing and takeoff, providing a memorable reminder that every pilot’s journey begins somewhere.
And for one lucky visitor from Cantril, the day truly soared! He was the winner of the door prize, a free airplane ride to be scheduled soon.
A special feature of this year’s event was the display of the Villages of Van Buren America 250 commemorative letterpress artwork created by local artist and Villages Folk School Director Mel Stockwell. Each signed and numbered piece is a lasting keepsake that blends
artistry, history, and community while commemorating this milestone year. The artwork remains available for purchase at the Van Buren County Welcome Center, located at 809 1st Street in Keosauqua, offering visitors an opportunity to own a handcrafted piece of the
Villages’ America 250 celebration.
Fly Van Buren “Freedom Takes Flight” offered a fitting tribute to America 250 by celebrating the innovation, exploration, and community spirit that continue to define both aviation and small-town America. Most importantly, it provided an opportunity for families and friends to
slow down, pull up a lawn chair, and enjoy a beautiful summer morning under the open skies of the Villages of Van Buren County. In a year celebrating America 250, Fly Van Buren “Freedom Takes Flight” served as a reminder that some of our most treasured traditions are the simplest ones: gathering together, looking skyward, and finding joy in a summer morning spent with neighbors, family,
and friends, and sharing in a sense of wonder.
