A Fairfield man is facing two felony charges following an alleged assault at Petra Park in Fairfield on the evening of June 19th, according to a press release from Fairfield Police Department Interim Chief Joel Smith.
Kipp Newton, 49, has been charged with Willful Injury — Causing Bodily Injury, a Class D Felony, and Going Armed with Intent, also a Class D Felony.
Officers were dispatched to the 100 block of North Main Street at approximately 8:13 p.m. after receiving a report of an assault. Upon arrival, officers located a victim who had sustained injuries and was being attended to by EMS. The victim was transported to Jefferson County Health Center for treatment.
According to court documents, Newton approached a group of people at Petra Park with a knife drawn. The group pushed him out of the park and told him to leave. Newton then retrieved a metal baseball bat from a nearby vehicle and struck the victim in the head, causing visible bleeding. Witnesses in the area captured the altercation on video, which officers used to identify him, according to court documents.
Court records also note that during a post-Miranda interview, Newton alluded to having intentionally gone to the park to look for someone. Other witnesses who were with Newton also told officers he had stated his intention to go to the park to find someone before the incident occurred.
Newton was located and taken into custody without incident with the assistance of deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. He was transported to the Jefferson County Jail and was held pending an initial appearance, which had not yet occurred at the time of this report.
