John Dennis Van Gorp, 91, of Ottumwa died at 11:23 p.m. June 5, 2026 at his home.
He was born May 1, 1935 in Grinnell to Maxine Goehring Van Gorp. He married Janice Diane Swaim May 3, 1955 and she preceded him in death March 18, 2025.
A 1954 graduate of Ottumwa High School, Dennis worked for the United States Postal Service in Ottumwa for many years before moving to Osceola for 8 years where he served as the Postmaster before retiring. Dennis and Janice later moved back to Ottumwa where he worked for River Community Credit Union as CFO and served as Board President.
Dennis enjoyed hosting Weight Watchers cooking demonstrations with his wife, coaching his sons little league baseball team where he was once named manager of the year, and attending all of his grandchildren’s activities.
Surviving is his son, Brian (Carolyn) Van Gorp of Ottumwa; grandchildren, Neisha (Tristan) Cook of Oskaloosa, Jonathan Cole Van Gorp of Blakesburg and Tamara (Larry) Wheaton of Ottumwa; 2 great-grandchildren, Brett and Kye; and siblings, Gretchen (Steve) Caldwell of Joplin, MO and Steve (Cecila) Van Gorp of Oskaloosa.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Brett Van Gorp.
His body has been cremated and no services are planned.
