Birmingham Community Church presented its 2026 Margaret Wilson Scholarship awards during a Community Worship Service on Sunday, June 7th, recognizing five recipients from the Birmingham area, according to a social media post from the church.

The scholarship program traces its roots back to 1997, when the will of Margaret Wilson — a former school teacher at Birmingham High School — named Birmingham United Methodist Church as one of the beneficiaries of her estate. Per her wishes, $110,000 was used to establish the scholarship fund for Birmingham community members. Birmingham Community Church has continued to administer the program in the same manner ever since.

Over the past 29 years, the program has awarded more than $235,000 in scholarships to over 96 recipients. The program is notable for its broad eligibility — unlike many scholarship programs, it is not limited to graduating seniors. Recipients have included local graduating seniors, non-traditional students furthering their education, adults training for a career change, and those pursuing master’s degrees. There is also no limit to the number of times a person can apply.

The 2026 recipients are Bailey Headley, Rylee Philips, Hunter Wagner, Kadence Nusbaum, and Kaylee Palmer. Congratulations to all five recipients.

The church said it believes Margaret Wilson would be proud of the lasting impact her generosity has had on the community she called home.
