An Ottumwa man is facing a serious misdemeanor charge after authorities say a disturbance escalated into a physical altercation.
The Ottumwa Police Department responded to a disturbance in the 1000 block of Venture Drive on May 31 at approximately 7:03 p.m.
According to a criminal complaint, 53-year-old Thomas Johnson of Ottumwa was identified during the investigation.
Court records state that surveillance video showed Johnson exiting his vehicle, approaching the victim, and striking her in the face with a closed fist.
Officers reported observing redness on the right side of the victim’s face. The victim told law enforcement that the injury occurred when Johnson struck her.
A warrant was served on Johnson on June 5. He was transported to the Wapello County Jail and later released on a promise to appear without posting bail.
Johnson is charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury or Mental Illness, a serious misdemeanor.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 25. Court records also show that a no-contact order was issued on June 6.
