An update is being released regarding a pedestrian accident that occurred on May 5, 2026, Authorities have released additional information regarding the pedestrian accident on Highway 34 near Church Street in Wapello County.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, a westbound vehicle driven by 79-year-old Richard L. Hough of West Burlington was traveling on Highway 34 near mile marker 189 when, for an unknown reason, a pedestrian reportedly ran in front of the vehicle. The vehicle struck the pedestrian in the westbound lane before coming to a stop.
The driver was not injured in the crash. The pedestrian suffered injuries and was transported for medical treatment. The individual’s name is being withheld pending notification of family members.
The crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol, with assistance from the Ottumwa Police Department, Wapello County Sheriff’s Office, Ottumwa Fire Department, ORMICS, AirCare, Cedar Rapids State Radio, and the Iowa Department of Transportation.
