Pekin’s track and field programs turned in a strong showing at the Southeast Iowa Superconference Meet at WACO on Thursday, May 7th, with the girls placing second in the North Division and the boys also finishing second — while racking up conference championships, a meet record, and several performances that would have competed for titles across both divisions.
Team Standings
WACO won the North Division girls title with 139 points, followed by Pekin coming up just short with 135, Louisa-Muscatine with 105.5, Highland with 84, Hillcrest Academy with 68, Columbus with 61.5, Lone Tree with 55, Winfield-Mt. Union with 29, and Wapello with 13. Mediapolis won the South Division with 176 points.
Columbus won the North Division boys title with 172 points, followed by Pekin with 125, Louisa-Muscatine with 106, WACO with 98, Winfield-Mt. Union with 79, Wapello with 59, Highland with 43, and Hillcrest Academy with 32. Mediapolis won the South Division with 161 points.
Pekin Girls
The Pekin girls placed second in the North Division with 135 points — just four behind winner WACO — claiming eight conference championships, highlighted by four from Chloe Glosser and two from Anna Hadley in the throwing events, as the Lady Panther dynamic duo won every event they competed in.
Glosser swept all three open distance events to claim conference championships in the 800-meter run, 1,500-meter run, and 3,000-meter run — all of which also would have placed first in the South Division. She won the 800-meter run in 2:21.30, edging runner-up Josie Dykstra of WACO at 2:22.77, with Callie Deutschle 12th in 3:01.10. In the 1,500-meter run, she crossed in 5:09.85 — more than six seconds ahead of runner-up Fiona McGill of Louisa-Muscatine at 5:15.01 — with Emerson Porter ninth in 5:59.41. Her 3,000-meter run victory in 10:57.75 was equally dominant, more than 20 seconds clear of runner-up Macie Carter of WACO at 11:17.82, with Harper Guise eighth in 13:36.91.
Paislee Coleman won the 100-meter hurdles conference championship in 16.26 — a time that also would have placed first in the South Division — with Bren Graber of WACO second in 16.55 and Carlie Gambell fourth in 18.08. Anna Hadley swept the throwing events, winning the discus conference championship at 128-06.50 — a mark that also would have topped the South Division — with Bella Forbes of Columbus second at 111-04.50 and Taylor Moore sixth at 90-10. Hadley also won the shot put conference championship in a meet record 45-00.50 — again topping what the South Division produced — with Forbes second at 38-00.50 and Kendra Schultz fifth at 30-07.50.
The shuttle hurdle relay crew of Abby Guise, Carlie Gambell, Reece Brisby, and Paislee Coleman claimed the conference title in 1:10.92, more than four seconds ahead of WACO’s second-place 1:15.48 — a time that also would have won the South Division. The distance medley foursome of Brin Lauderman, Addison Smith, Maddy Petrehn, and Chloe Glosser won the conference championship in 4:28.76, pulling nearly ten seconds clear of runner-up WACO at 4:38.45.
Autumn Coleman placed 12th in the 100-meter dash in 15.91 behind winner Rya Scott of Hillcrest Academy at 12.53. Taylor Moore placed 10th in the 200-meter dash in 30.92 and Kendra Schultz 11th in 31.88, behind winner Scott at 26.16. Callie Deutschle placed ninth in the 400-meter dash in 1:14.84 behind winner Ella Howell of Columbus at 59.93. Abby Guise placed eighth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:22.40 and Carlie Gambell ninth in 1:24.14, behind winner Howell at 1:07.11.
The sprint medley group of Breanna Drish, Reece Brisby, Fynlie Brooks, and Mya Glick placed sixth in 2:13.04 behind winner Lone Tree at 2:02.12. The 4×100 squad of Addison Smith, Brin Lauderman, Reece Brisby, and Paislee Coleman placed fourth in 54.67 behind winner Highland at 51.61. The 4×200 unit of Brin Lauderman, Addison Smith, Fynlie Brooks, and Mya Glick placed second in 1:57.47 behind winner Highland at 1:50.89. The 4×400 crew of Maddy Petrehn, Mya Glick, Carlie Gambell, and Emerson Porter placed third in 4:58.33 behind winner WACO at 4:24.95. The 4×800 foursome of Emerson Porter, Harper Guise, Callie Deutschle, and Maddy Petrehn placed third in 11:42.28 behind winner WACO at 10:48.83.
Bren Graber of WACO won the high jump with a clearance of 5-01, with Paislee Coleman and Brin Lauderman tied for fifth at 4-08. Ava Christofferson of Lone Tree won the long jump at 17-01.75, with Mya Glick fifth at 14-09.25 and Fynlie Brooks seventh at 13-07.50.
Pekin Boys
The Pekin boys placed second in the North Division with 125 points, claiming six conference championships, with four of them in relay events, and setting a new meet record in the sprint medley.
Alijah Brock won the 200-meter dash conference championship in 22.60, pulling away from runner-up Alexander Rees of Columbus at 22.98, with Henry Eubanks 10th in 26.43. Cole Millikin won the 3,200-meter run conference championship in 10:39.59, more than 15 seconds ahead of runner-up Victor Tovar of Columbus at 10:55.43, with Garett Greiner sixth in 12:16.94.
The core foursome of Aliyas Brock, Alijah Brock, Riley Smith, and Nolan Glick was virtually unstoppable on the evening, combining to win three conference championships across three different relay events. They set a new meet record in the sprint medley with a time of 1:34.18 — a mark that also would have placed first in the South Division — pulling more than five seconds clear of Wapello’s second-place 1:39.60. The same group returned to claim the 4×100 championship in 43.84, edging Columbus’s second-place 44.50, and won the 4×200 title in 1:30.62 — another time that would have topped the South Division — with Wapello second in 1:34.83. The 4×400 unit of Nolan Glick, Mason Dahlstrom, Riley Smith, and Lane Fariss added a fourth relay championship to the haul, pulling more than five seconds clear of runner-up WACO at 3:33.28 to win in 3:28.05.
Aliyas Brock placed fourth in the 100-meter dash in 12.03 and Henry Adam 10th in 12.80, behind winner Lamar Ceant of Columbus at 11.02. Mason Dahlstrom placed fifth in the 400-meter dash in 55.21 and Cael Silvers sixth in 55.31, behind winner Oscar Cline of Louisa-Muscatine at 52.52. Lane Fariss placed second in the 800-meter run in 2:02.27 behind winner Jude Dykstra of WACO at 2:00.58, with Landon Fariss 10th in 2:23.40. Cole Millikin placed sixth in the 1,600-meter run in 5:05.93 behind winner Garrett Landau of WACO at 4:43.18.
Keegan Dickey placed seventh in the 110-meter hurdles in 18.82 and Jaxon Mefford 10th in 21.00, behind winner Ceant at 14.38. Cael Silvers placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:06.47 behind winner Cline at 57.26.
The 4×800 foursome of Mason Dahlstrom, Cody Silvers, Cole Millikin, and Lane Fariss placed second in 8:35.08 behind winner WACO at 8:26.89. The shuttle hurdle relay group of Jaxon Mefford, Ryann Hammes, Ethan Porter, and Keegan Dickey placed fifth in 1:17.19 behind winner Columbus at 1:01.06. The distance medley squad of Cael Silvers, Asaa McCabe, Brody Sobaski, and Cody Silvers placed fourth in 4:04.82 behind winner WACO at 3:41.62.
Brody Sobaski placed second in the high jump clearing 5-08 behind winner Oscar Cline of Louisa-Muscatine at 5-10. Brantyn Sieren placed third in the shot put at 40-03.50 and Cal Miller sixth at 37-07, behind winner Colin Anderson of Winfield-Mt. Union at 47-03.50. Johnathan Delaney placed ninth in the discus at 107-08.50 and Cal Miller 11th at 83-04, behind winner Hayden Cantrell of Louisa-Muscatine at 143-06.50. Jaxon Mefford placed eighth in the long jump at 17-04 and Henry Adam 10th at 17-02.25, behind winner Hayden Shelman of WACO at 20-08.25.
Both Pekin squads now prepare for the state qualifying meet at Sigourney on Thursday, May 14th.
