Federal officials have approved more than $13 million in disaster recovery funding for communities across Kansas, Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska, according to an announcement from FEMA.

The funding comes through FEMA’s Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, which helps states, local governments, tribes and territories recover from disasters while also strengthening infrastructure against future events.

FEMA said the money will be distributed to state and local agencies to support repairs to public buildings, roads and other critical infrastructure, as well as reimburse costs tied to emergency response efforts aimed at protecting public health and safety.

Several projects in the Midwest were included in the latest round of approved funding.

In Nebraska, more than $1.3 million was awarded to the Grand Island Regional Medical Center in Grand Island to reimburse emergency staffing measures used during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Iowa, Adair County Memorial Hospital received more than $830,000 to help repair or replace public buildings damaged during severe storms, tornadoes and flooding that impacted the area in May 2024.

Kansas officials also received support, with nearly $335,000 approved for the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City for pandemic-related expenses.

In Missouri, nearly $175,000 was approved for Ozarks Medical Center in West Plains to cover costs connected to the COVID-19 response.

FEMA also announced an additional $408,000 in hazard mitigation funding for projects in Iowa and Nebraska designed to reduce or prevent future disaster-related damage.

The agency said the funding is intended to help communities recover while improving long-term safety and resilience following major disasters.
