Local Project Seeks Donations on Giving Tuesday

An Ottumwa committee member is asking for the public to keep a local project in mind on this Giving Tuesday.

Motorists traveling along the Market Street Bridge might have noticed some construction occurring at the former skate park. Liz Wilson, Chair of the Capital Campaign Committee, says the work is for the Market Street Inclusive Play Space, an 8,000 square-foot park that promises to bring fun every individual, regardless of age or ablility.

“We’re going to have a surface that is conducive,” Wilson commented. “You’ll also have swings that are accessible. You can kind of almost imagine a hammock-type swing that people can be moved in and out of. We’re going to have handicap accessible restrooms with adult changing tables.”

Other features of the park include a sensory wall and wheelchair charging stations.

Wilson says the capital campaign committee is raising money for the project and says the timeline of the park becoming a reality will be sometime in 2026.

“We are hoping to have something in place next year,” Wilson shared.

According to Wilson, Noel Insurance will be a matching donor on Giving Tuesday (December 2). Any donation given on this day will be matched up to $10,000.

“So if you give 25 [dollars], it will end up being 50,” Wilson explained. “If you give 100 today, it will end up being 200.”
