A past president of the Iowa Corn Promotion Board says E15 access in California should help give corn farmers a demand boost.
“The best way to find that (demand) is through renewable fuels,” said Kelly Nieuwenhuis.
Nieuwenhuis, who also farms in northwestern Iowa, says California is a substantial renewable fuels market.
“At full potential, from what I understand, that’s about 700 million gallons of ethanol per year for California going through E15,” he said.
Earlier this month, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 30 into law, which approved the sale of E15 in the state.
Nieuwenhuis tells Brownfield that California was already a major user of E85 fuel blends.
“I know Pearson Fuels in California alone sold 135 million gallons of E85 last year,” he said. “The flex fuel vehicles are being used there, and now with E15 all vehicles 2001 and newer can be using ethanol blends in California.”
Prior to the bill’s signing, California had been the only state in the nation that didn’t allow the sale of E15.
