Grain marketing specialist says there could be opportunities to protect some margins this fall

The president of AgResource Company says there could be opportunities to protect some margins this fall.

Dan Basse tells Brownfield farmers will need to be more proactive in their grain marketing.

“We’ve had December corn recently at $4.60 a bushel and new soybeans making it close to $11 a bushel,” he says. “Those are some areas that offer some margins to farmers. Not only think about today but think forward because those carries in the market offer premium opportunities for the U.S. farmer longer term.”

He says the market continues to monitor U.S. harvest progress and South American weather.

“When we get the monsoon started over much of Brazil, it tends to stay that way,” he says. “It’s very hard to see a drought market rally. If we wait until the middle or end of March, we can see the monsoon to withdraw early. That could cause problems for their winter corn crop.”

Basse says implementing an adaptable grain marketing plan could help farmers better navigate market volatility heading into 2026.
