Iowa farmer says diversification is key in tough ag economy

An Iowa farmer says being diversified is helping during the downturn in the ag economy.

Logan Lyon farms in the southeast part of the state.

“Here outside of Bluegrass we are really diverse, further than the row crop and livestock even. We make a lot of hay (and) straw, so having our hands in different pots is going to be really helpful here for the next couple of years.”

He tells Brownfield strength in the livestock market is encouraging.

“Cattle are just gold right now, so I’ve gotten a little bit more involved in that so maybe I’m the wrong guy as far as buying low and selling high. It feels like I’m buying high right now, but diversity I think is going to be what gets a lot of folks through in a positive way.”

Lyon says while he’s hopeful corn and soybean prices will improve, rising input costs are keeping the pressure on margins.
