The Mahaska Health Foundation and Hospice Serenity House welcomed runners, walkers, families, and volunteers to the 14th Annual Run in the Sun at Statesmen Community Stadium. More than 600 community members participated in the annual fundraiser, which supports compassionate end-of-life care for patients and families served by the Hospice Serenity House.
The morning began with a warm welcome from Mahaska Health leaders, a prayer led by local pastor Jon Nelson, and the presentation of colors by Oskaloosa’s Boy Scout Troop and Cub Scout Pack. The National Anthem was performed by Noah Rouw, great-grandson of this year’s honored Serenity House patient, Walter Cubit.
This year’s event featured the family of Walter Cubit, who shared his story as a reminder of the love, strength, and dignity made possible through hospice care. Daughters Carole Comstock and Lorri Grubb offered heartfelt words to honor their father’s legacy and expressed gratitude to the Hospice Serenity House team and community supporters.
Runners and walkers completed the 5K and 2K courses on the Oskaloosa recreation trail before finishing on the stadium track, where awards were presented to top finishers. Afterward, families enjoyed a Kids Fun Run, inflatables, a foam pit, face painting, vendor booths, SnoBiz treats, and refreshments provided by Untamed Nutrition. Interactive trivia and educational booths also helped participants learn more about the mission and volunteer opportunities with the Hospice Serenity House.
Funds raised during the event go directly to the Mahaska Health Foundation and Hospice Serenity House to ensure the continuation of expert, compassionate care for patients and their families.

The 15th Annual Run in the Sun is scheduled for August 1, 2026. Community members are encouraged to mark their calendars for another opportunity to support the Mahaska Health Foundation and Hospice Serenity House.
