The trial for two men charged in connection with a hayrack ride accident in Keokuk County has been moved to Mahaska County and rescheduled. Court records show that the trial for 36-year-old Daniel Brubaker and 32-year-old David Heady will now take place on August 26th at 9 a.m., delayed from its original July 15th date.
Brubaker and Heady each face three counts of child endangerment causing serious injury—class C felonies—and 10 counts of child endangerment causing bodily injury, which are class D felonies.
The venue change was granted due to concerns about pretrial publicity and the number of alleged victims and their families in Keokuk County, described in court documents as a “relatively small community.” Prosecutors also requested the trial not be moved too far away, citing the burden it could place on numerous witnesses from the area.
The charges stem from an incident on October 14th, 2023, when the pair were allegedly operating a vehicle pulling a “goose neck” trailer loaded with middle school students. According to court filings, the vehicle was driven in a negligent manner, leading it to veer into a ditch and throw several children onto the roadway.
The crash happened in rural Keokuk County and resulted in multiple injuries. The case continues to draw attention from residents and authorities alike.
