A Fairfield man has been arrested and charged with burglary after allegedly stealing items from a business and being caught on a trail camera returning to stolen goods he had staged nearby, according to a press release from Fairfield Police Chief Joel Smith and Jefferson County court documents.
Gregory Scott Robinson, 47, of Fairfield has been charged with Burglary in the Third Degree, a Class D Felony. The alleged burglary occurred sometime during the night of August 5th around 10:00 p.m. into the early morning hours of August 6th around 6:00 a.m. Fairfield Police officers responded to the business in the 600 block of West Stone Avenue at approximately 10:27 a.m. on August 6th after the property owner reported the break-in.
According to court documents, Robinson allegedly entered a business on West Stone Avenue without permission after hours while the location was unoccupied. He stole multiple items from the building and staged additional stolen items on a cart that was hidden on a trailhead north of the building. The victim located the cart, recovered some of the stolen items, and repositioned the cart with trail cameras observing it.
Robinson allegedly returned to the cart on two separate occasions to rummage through the items and was captured on camera in possession of a stolen backpack that had been stored in a storage unit within the building. The backpack was later confirmed stolen by its owner. Robinson was identified through trail camera footage, with his tattoos matched against tattoo records on file at the Jefferson County Jail. A dog leash left at the scene was found to match the collar of Robinson’s dog, which is visible in the camera footage from the incident. The victim reported $1,601 in tools still missing from the building.
Over the course of the investigation, officers collected evidence, reviewed surveillance footage, and conducted interviews. A warrant was requested and issued for Robinson’s arrest. Officers actively attempted to locate Robinson before taking him into custody on Tuesday, August 25th at approximately 7:54 p.m. Robinson was transported to the Jefferson County Jail.
As of the time of publication, Robinson had not yet had his initial appearance. The arrest warrant notes a possible bond of $5,000 cash or surety.
