A Jefferson County man has been charged after allegedly attempting to grab an officer’s holstered firearm while completely naked and under the influence of mushrooms earlier this year.

Tate Richardson, 21, of Libertyville has been charged with Disarming a Peace Officer, a Class D Felony, and Interference with Official Acts, a simple misdemeanor. The incident occurred at approximately 12:45 a.m. on April 26th at a residence in West Des Moines, where officers from the West Des Moines Police Department responded to a report of a disturbance.

According to court records, officers made contact with Richardson, who was completely naked and under the influence of mushrooms and described as being in a bad mental state. Richardson then jumped from a third-story balcony before allegedly attempting to grab one of the officer’s holstered service weapons. Officers took Richardson to the ground and detained him in handcuffs, but he continued to physically resist. Richardson was eventually sedated by West Des Moines EMS and transported to a hospital for treatment.

A warrant for Richardson’s arrest was issued following the incident but was not served until Friday, August 21st. Richardson is being held in the Dallas County Jail pending an initial appearance.
