As awareness of the benefits of cover crops grows, their adoption has been steadily increasing across the state. One farm in Boone is taking an innovative approach by integrating cover crops into pumpkin production.
Jeremy Gustafson, a member of Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI), recently gave a tour of his farm during a PFI Field Day, where he shared how he incorporates cover crops into his operation. He noted that PFI has been a valuable resource in helping him adopt cover crops, even supporting the launch of his cover crop seed business through the Cover Crop Business Accelerator program.
While Gustafson now experiments with a variety of cover crop strategies, he encourages other farmers to start small when first adopting them. He emphasized that weather plays a significant role in the success of cover crops, so it’s essential to stay adaptable to the challenges nature may present.
Gustafson added that PFI events like this one provide a great opportunity not only to share his experiences but also to learn from other farmers in attendance.
