Peace Officers Memorial Day, a solemn occasion observed annually on May 15th to honor local, state, and federal law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
Among those remembered are two Washington, Iowa, law enforcement officers who were tragically killed in the line of duty on June 25, 1930. Washington City Marshal Aaron Bailey and Washington County Sheriff William Sweet were fatally shot inside the Washington County Courthouse after arresting a man in connection with a stolen car from Ottumwa.
Washington is also the hometown of FBI Special Agent Terry Anderson, who was killed in 1966 during the heroic rescue of a kidnapped 17-year-old girl in what came to be known as the Shade Gap Incident in Pennsylvania. Special Agent Anderson’s bravery and sacrifice were honored in 2016 during a 50th anniversary ceremony at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington.
Each May, Iowa’s state leadership, law enforcement agencies, and the families of fallen officers gather at the Iowa Peace Officer Memorial in Des Moines to pay tribute to those who gave their lives in service to their communities. This year’s memorial ceremony is being held today, offering a moment of reflection, remembrance, and gratitude for their selfless dedication.
Peace Officers Memorial Day and National Police Week serve as vital reminders of the courage and commitment shown by members of law enforcement, and the enduring impact of their service on the communities they protect.
