Students at Keokuk Middle School got a unique, hands-on lesson in drone photography thanks to a visit from local aerial photographer Doug Ewing. His appearance was part of the Keokuk Arts Center’s ongoing “Artists in the Schools” program, which brings working artists into classrooms to share their craft.

Ewing introduced students to the fundamentals of drone technology and aerial photography, breaking down how drones are used to capture stunning images from above. He also led a live drone demonstration, navigating one through an indoor obstacle course. The highlight for many students was the chance to fly the drones themselves, testing their skills and coordination.

The experience tied directly into the school’s STEM curriculum, offering a practical and exciting way to explore science and technology. Beyond technical know-how, students also practiced problem-solving and teamwork—skills that are vital in both academic and real-world settings.

The program left students energized and inspired, showing them how creative arts and cutting-edge technology can come together in powerful ways.
