An Ottumwa man wanted for assaulting and threatening his girlfriend is behind bars after police said he punched an officer in the face during his arrest Wednesday night.
33-year-old Schuyler Letts faces charges of assault on persons of certain occupations (aggravated misdemeanor), interference with official acts (serious misdemeanor), first-degree harassment (aggravated misdemeanor), and domestic abuse assault (simple misdemeanor).
Court records say that at approximately 9:45 PM on February 26, officers observed Letts, who had an open warrant for his arrest, hiding from officers in a residence on South James Street. Letts allegedly refused to place his hands behind his head when police instructed him to do so. Additionally, police say Letts punched an officer in the face while the latter was attempting to place handcuffs on him.
Authorities wanted Letts in connection to an incident on January 25 in which court records say Letts repeatedly shoved his girlfriend, held an airsoft gun against the back of her head, and threatened to kill her.
Letts is currently lodged in the Wapello County Jail. His bond has been set at $2,000 for the harassment and domestic abuse charges. Court records do not show a bond amount for his alleged offenses committed on February 26.
