OTTUMWA – Charles Max “Mick” Lawson, 58, of Columbia, SC, formerly of Ottumwa, died December 10, 2024 at his home in Columbia due to cardiac related issues.
He was born September 3, 1966 to Charles R. and Teresa M. Parks Lawson. He married Joni Quinlan on April 24, 1992. From this union they had two daughters, Callie Jean and Morgan Marie. They later divorced. He spent the last few years with Ruth Anne Frerichs who he loved exploring and doing life with.
A 1984 graduate of Ottumwa High School, Mick received an Associate of Arts Degree from Indian Hills Community College and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business from Buena Vista University. Over the years, Mick worked various places including Manpower, 18 years with Indian Hills Community College, having served as an instructor in Advanced Technology, Department Chair of Advanced Technology, Assistant to the President, Business and Industry Liaison, and golf coach. He also worked at U.S Bank and was the Assistant Golf Pro at The Preserve at Honey Creek Resort.
Mick was truly a light in our lives. He was a social butterfly that would befriend anyone and everyone, he never knew a stranger. Mick found such joy in making others laugh. He had the innate ability to tell you the same story 10 times and still have you crying with laughter. As everyone knows, his passion was golf. He also loved reading and had a very competitive nature when it came to board games such as Rummikub and Word Master. He loved his family and was especially proud of his daughters.
He was loved by all and will be greatly missed. Mick was one of a kind. A true hole in one!
Surviving are his two daughters, Callie Jean Lawson of Nashville, TN, and Morgan Marie Lawson (Benjamin Lee) of Hilton Head Island, SC, his loving partner, Ruth Anne Frerichs of Columbia, SC, three sisters, Linda Lawson of Franklin, IN, Laura (Randy) Owens of Ankeny, and Lisa (Wade) Bassett of Albia, in addition to several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be open to the public from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday, December 20th at Reece Funeral Home. His family will be present to greet friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 21st at Reece Funeral Home with Deacon Jim Vonderharr officiating. Cremation will follow the service. Private inurnment will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery at a later date.
A further time to celebrate Mick’s life will follow at the Izaak Walton League, 11077 90th St. Ottumwa.
Memorials may be made to the family to be designated at a later date.
