The Sigourney City Council held its meeting Wednesday night.
After the consent agenda was approved, property owner Ben Brubaker spoke to the council and asked for forgiveness on late fees for a tenant’s water bill. Brubaker says he inherited a tenant that he tried evicting and having the tenant’s water shut off. In total, the water bill ran up to $1,087. $831 was late fees and Brubaker said he would pay the net cost of $256. The council voted 4-1 to forgive the penalties.
The Sigourney city council continued to discuss having the visitor’s guide in the Sigourney News-Review. The cost has increased since last year and will now be $650 for half a page. The council unanimously approved the visitor’s guide contract.
The first Sigourney City Council meeting in 2025 falls on January 1. The council approved moving the date of that meeting to January 2.
Keokuk County Economic Development Executive Director Gary Iosbaker provided an update on the childcare initiative. Iosbaker says he attended the Iowa Women’s Conference summit on childcare on Tuesday and called it “very informative.” One of the subjects discussed was bridging the wage gap for caregivers. Iosbaker says there are a number of initiatives that are being explored to address this issue.
Iosbaker also noted Sigourney Junior High School was recognized by US News and World Report for its academic performance.
