Robert Edwin Burchett, known fondly as Edwin to his friends and loved ones, passed into eternal rest on November 17, 2024, at the age of 82. His final moments were spent surrounded by the warmth and love of his family in Keosauqua. Edwin, a beacon of strength and joy, was born on December 12, 1941, in Milton, to proud parents Burr B. and Aneth O. (Price) Burchett. His roots ran deep in the community, where he not only grew up but also shaped a life full of love, laughter, and lasting memories.

Edwin’s journey began in the halls of Fox Valley, where he graduated with the school’s first class. It was there he met the love of his life, Sue Wiley, the daughter of Ralph and Anna Wiley. Their hearts intertwined, Edwin and Sue exchanged vows on May 19, 1962, and together they cultivated a life on the Burnett family farm. Their love blossomed into a family with the birth of their three sons: Shawn, Brent, and Nathan.

In his youth, Edwin shone as a top athlete, excelling in basketball and baseball. His passion for sports continued to burn brightly as he became a player/coach for the Cantril Men’s Fastpitch softball team. His prowess as a fastpitch shortstop was renowned, and in 1991 he led his team to the Men’s Fast Pitch National Championship in Reno/Sparks, Nevada. Edwin’s legacy on the field was matched by his commitment to faith as an elder of the Cantril Christian Church for over forty-five years. His devotion to music and community was evident through his participation in Jerry and the Burchett’s quintet, where he sang alongside his sons and occasionally with his wife, Sue, bringing joy to churchgoers and locals alike.

Edwin’s zest for life extended to his love for antique tractors, a hobby that saw him actively participating in tractor pulls. A true sports enthusiast, he was an avid follower of the Saint Louis Cardinals and the Iowa Hawkeyes, rarely missing a game and always ready to cheer on his teams.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Sue, and their sons, Shawn (Ladonna) Burchett, Brent (Kathy) Burchett, and Nathan (Jean) Burchett. His legacy includes the joy and pride of his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will continue to cherish his memory.

Edwin was preceded in death by his parents, Burr B. and Aneth Burchett, his brother, “Burr” Burton, and his sister, Charlotte Swanson.

In honoring Edwin’s final wishes, his body has been cremated. The family invites friends and loved ones to join them in a visitation at Cranston Family Funeral Home (Pedrick Funeral Home) in Keosauqua on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, opening at 2:00 PM, with the family present from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A memorial service celebrating Edwin’s life will be held at the Cantril Christian Church at 2:00 PM on Thursday, November 21, 2024, with Pastor Lee Carr and Kevin Mote officiating.

Gifts to a memorial to be designated later by the family may be left at the funeral home, church or mailed to the family at 13077 Route J40, Milton, IA 52570.  Friends may leave online condolences at www.cranstonfamilyfuneralhome.com
