An Ottumwa man is behind bars after authorities say he broke into a home and repeatedly attacked an occupant.

32-year-old Joshua Michael was charged with first-degree burglary, a Class B felony.

On May 27, court records say Michael entered a residence on the 300 block of Evergreen Street and was confronted by a male occupant.

The Ottumwa Police Department says Michael struck the victim on the side of the head, nearly rendering him unconscious. The two fought and the victim was able to remove Michael from the home.

However, Michael forced his way back into the residence and hit the victim several times with rocks according to court documents. The victim reportedly suffered a laceration on his neck and bruises over his body.

Michael was arrested on September 26 and transported to the Wapello County Jail. He is being held without bail pending a hearing with a magistrate judge.
