A judge ruled in favor of a state senator and the Jefferson County Treasurer in a dispute involving the car title of the senator’s daughter.
Senator Adrian Dickey and Treasurer Mark Myers had their respective lawsuits dismissed. The lawsuit, filed last year by Korynn Dickey, claimed the senator bought a vehicle for her in 2020 but then forged her signature to place a lien on it.
The car was later totaled in an accident in 2023 but Korynn Dickey’s insurance company refused to pay on the policy because of the lien. Additionally, Senator Dickey would receive any insurance payments as the lienholder.
In court documents, evidence was presented of a text conversation between Adrian Dickey, Korynn Dickey, and Shawna Husted, Korynn’s mother, in which it was agreed upon that Adrian would be the lienholder. The conversation occurred on July 30, 2020, when the vehicle was purchased.
In his ruling, Iowa District Court Judge Daniel P. Wilson says Korynn Dickey waited too long to voice her objection to the arrangement.
“At the time Korynn did not show any incomprehension as to what a “lienholder” was and if she did not understand she could have asked, but didn’t. There is simply no evidence that [Adrian Dickey] defrauded or cheated his way into becoming a lienholder on the red Corolla’s title and if Korynn objected to that reservation, the time for her to speak was before the purchase and not in a lawsuit filed years later.”
In a previous ruling, the allegation of civil conspiracy was dismissed.
