Rita Marie Gergely, a smart, witty, and generous woman, passed away on August 11, 2024 at her home. She was born to her loving parents, George and Agnes Cecelia (Cleary) Gergely on 14th March, 1959 in Oskaloosa, IA. Rita spent an illustrious career being the former Chief of the Bureau of Lead Poisoning Prevention at the Iowa Department of Health. During her tenure, she made significant contributions to public health that have left a lasting impact on many lives. Rita was a beacon of knowledge and insight, her intelligent presence known and respected by all who worked with her.
Rita resided in rural Monroe County, Iowa, living a fulfilling life full of love and dedication. She was never married but found the essence of family in her beloved mother, Agnes, whom she cared for with unwavering dedication. Moreover, Rita’s love extended beyond her immediate family to her precious nieces, whom she treated as her own, crafting beautiful christening and Easter outfits for them. Her faith was integral to her life, a legacy passed down from her mother. A faithful Catholic, Rita’s prayers were a testament to her devout belief, morning, day, and night.
Rita was not merely a person; she was a force of nature, a woman of substance whose generosity knew no bounds. Her life was a testament to the virtues of selflessness, intelligence, and quick wit. She was a voracious researcher, ensuring her words and actions were always backed by solid facts. Rita was a woman who lived her life on her terms, with a strong focus on her faith, family, and work. Above all, she was an embodiment of love, kindness, and resilience.
She was survived by her sister, Joann Gergely of Ottumwa; two nieces, Chrissy Bedner and Caitlyn Lessard, great nieces, Gladys Jo-Agnes Rowe. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Agnes Gergely, and many aunts and uncles.
