Des Moines – Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird gives tips for Iowans for the new school year.
Bird reminds Iowans to never pass a stopped school bus.
“Passing a stopped school bus is not only illegal, but also dangerous. . .Remember to stop for school buses and slow down in school zones. We want to keep kids safe as school starts back up.”
Drivers approaching a school bus should stop at least 15 feet away that has its lights flashing yellow, red lights are flashing, or the arm is extended. The driver may proceed when the bus returns to its route. Violations may result in a fine and a drivers license suspension.
Student drivers must follow their permit guidelines. The young drivers are able to drive at any time with an adult. Students are restricted to drive only between the hours of 5 a.m. and 10 a.m.
Drivers should yield for pedestrians on crosswalks and caution when passing through a school zone. Parents and students should look both ways before crossing and avoid entering a street between parked cars. Students who walk or ride a bike to school should stay aware of their surroundings and be cautious of traffic.
If unrecognizable vehicles or people approach school grounds report the suspicious activity to school officials or law enforcement.
