A man is behind bars after Ottumwa police say he assaulted his pregnant wife last week.
Junior Jean, 40, has been charged with attempted nonconsensual termination of pregnancy (Class D felony) and domestic abuse assault of pregnant person with intent to inflict serious injury – first offense (Class D felony).
On July 30th at approximately 9:05 PM, the Ottumwa Police Department dispatched officers to a residence on the 100 block of South Cooper Avenue after a 911 hang-up, according to court records. A female was allegedly heard screaming for help before the call was disconnected.
The criminal complaint says an argument between Jean and the female occurred regarding the woman’s pregnancy. Police say the woman told officers that Jean made statements about ending the pregnancy and struck her multiple times in the abdomen with his legs. The victim complained of pain in her midsection and was transported to the hospital.
Jean was arrested and transported to the Wapello County Jail, where he is being held without bond.
Jean has a preliminary hearing scheduled for August 7th and has been ordered not to have any contact with the victim.
