An Ottumwa man was arrested after police say he smashed his mother’s car with a hammer and threatened her after she gave him a ride.

53-year-old Anthony Murdy was charged with going armed with intent (Class D felony) and third-degree criminal mischief (aggravated misdemeanor).

On March 19th, court records say Murdy became belligerent with his mother while she was providing him a ride in her vehicle. Murdy pulled a hammer from his coat and began striking the interior of the vehicle.

Police say the dash of the victim’s vehicle was dented. Murdy also allegedly smashed the vehicle’s gear shift, rendering it inoperable. The damage was estimated to cost $1,000.

Court documents also say Murdy raised the hammer in a threatening manner, causing his mother to fear for her safety.

A warrant for Murdy’s arrest was issued on March 20 and he was taken into custody on March 31.

Murdy is currently in the Wapello County Jail. His bail has been set at $5,000.
