The Ottumwa Housing Authority has welcomed Zach Simonson as its new Executive Director. A longtime advocate for housing in Ottumwa, Simonson brings experience in community development, public service and building local partnerships to the role.
Simonson succeeds Meliha Cavkusic, who served as OHA’s Executive Director from 2017 to 2026. Cavkusic is taking a new role as Executive Director of the housing authority in Georgetown, Kentucky.
“Safe, affordable housing gives people a foundation to build their lives, and the Ottumwa Housing Authority plays an important role in making that possible,” said Simonson. “I’m excited to work with our staff, residents and community partners to care for our properties, serve our residents well and help more people understand the housing resources available in Ottumwa.”
Simonson holds a master’s degree in public policy from the University of Northern Iowa. His work in Ottumwa has focused on community improvement and bringing people together to address local needs.
As Executive Director, Simonson will oversee the authority’s operations and work with its staff and Board of Commissioners to advance its housing mission. His priorities include strengthening communication with residents, building relationships with community organizations and making information about OHA’s programs easier to find and understand.
“I’m grateful to Meliha for her years of service to OHA and the people who call our properties home,” Simonson said. “We wish her the best in Georgetown, and I look forward to building on the work she and the staff have done.”
