On July 29, 2026, Madalyn June Bogert passed away at Manor House Care Center in Sigourney, Iowa. She had her lamp, photographs of the people she loved, and plenty of care and company until she left. She was 87 years old. Madalyn was born at home on January 1st, 1939, in Ash Grove, Iowa. She was welcomed into the world by her parents, Mary V Kenworthy Ward and Noel J. Ward. She grew up in the Ash Grove area, lived on a dairy farm and attended the Center 4 school with her brother Richard and their cousins, whom she loved dearly, as well as her best friend, Phyllis. She graduated from Bloomfield High School with the class of 1956, and married Harold Dean Bogert on January 6th, 1957, five days after she turned 18.
Madalyn and Harold square danced together with the Calico Clickers. She played with Coons High Bidders Ladies’ Card Club.
Her oldest child, Kevan Dean, was born one year later. When she was 21, she gave birth to Cindy Ann, and ten years later, Lisa Kay. She raised a garden, canned for winter, and cooked for nearly everyone, family or not. We can still taste her pies, dinner rolls, smell pot roast and hear the pressure cooker vent.
The kids grew up and Madalyn was with them. She drove many miles for Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, piano lessons, 4-H, baton practices, FFA, MYF youth group, and more. More than one car was worn out from driving them here and there. After the kids were gone from home, she obtained her CNA certificate, working in various care centers and hospitals.
Madalyn taught Sunday school at Drakesville United Methodist Church for decades. She painted nativity scenes with her students each year for generations and many of them are sat out on teachers’ desks, proudly displayed to this day. The love that she gave to others was boundless. While Madalyn was recovering at the University of Iowa, one of those children recognized her name, came to visit, and returned that love. Her favorite times were together with family, at football games (the 1986 Rose Bowl on her birthday) or the Iowa State Fair (with a cooler in the back and lunch in the car), in 1997, in Europe with HD and Cindy and winters in Phoenix with Cindy and Pat.
She loved to mow her lawn in the summer, and to paint china. She loved stained glass and quilts. She had a large collection of designer Barbies. She loved the hummingbirds outside her house. She loved airplanes and to fly every year to Phoenix. She was a diligent archiver of family history. She had an extensive knowledge of the genealogy of this (and other) families. Much of that knowledge remains with us in print and in the stories we could and will no doubt tell.
She is survived by her family, including her brother Richard Ward and his wife Phyllis; her son Kevan Bogert, his wife Andrea, their daughter Kendra Bogert-Baird and her husband Tyler; her daughter Cindy Silva and her husband Patrick; her daughter Lisa Bogert, and her daughter Brennan Bogert-St. Vincent, and Brennan’s wife Charlie. Other beloveds who carry her memory include nieces, nephews, and neighbors: Simon, Kathy, and the rest of the Borntrager family.
HD passed on October 11, 2001. Reunited.
Madalyn’s adamant wishes were for no visitation or funeral service. In lieu of flowers; memorials may be directed to Davis County Pioneer Cemeteries, Wesley Chapel Cemetery, or Davis County Look to the Stars Cancer Foundation and sent to:
