Thousands of miles from home, deployed U.S. service members rely on more than military resources to get through the challenges of deployment. The American Red Cross plays a vital role in providing emergency communication services, wellness programs and emotional support to military personnel serving at remote installations around the world.
Each year, specially trained Red Cross staff members deploy to military bases across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, where they assist service members stationed far from their families. One of their most important responsibilities is delivering emergency communications that connect military personnel with loved ones during family crises, including serious illnesses, deaths, births and other significant life events.
In addition to emergency messaging, Red Cross staff offer programs designed to support mental health and overall well-being. Activities such as mindful movement, relaxation sessions, creative workshops and social events provide service members with opportunities to reduce stress, recharge and connect with others outside of their daily military responsibilities.
These Red Cross centers serve as welcoming spaces where military members can take a break from the demands of deployment, participate in wellness activities or volunteer to support fellow service members and their communities.
Before deploying overseas, Red Cross staff complete extensive preparation that includes military orientation, emergency casework training, medical and security requirements and team-building exercises to prepare them for life on remote military installations.
The American Red Cross has supported the U.S. military for more than a century, standing alongside service members during conflicts and humanitarian missions around the world. Today, approximately 40 Red Cross mobile staff deploy each year to provide critical services and compassionate support at forward-deployed locations.
