Senator Grassley:

There continues to be debate within the industry about the balance between free markets and government oversight.

Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says the role of the nation’s largest meat packers in price transparency is still a concern from some producers in his state. “Since they’re making more money, we aren’t hearing that, but there’s still suspicion of anti-competitive practices of the big four. I’m really glad DOJ is investigating that.”

Senator Pete Ricketts of Nebraska tells Brownfield he’s concerned about the Administration’s approach to increasing beef imports to lower retail prices. “We ought to let the market play out here and not bring in, for example, a lot of foreign beef that could potentially throw off the market and the same standards that our beef goes through here in the United States.”

Ricketts says he’s spoken with President Trump and Ag Secretary Brooke Rollins on the impacts those decisions have had.
