The Fairfield City Council unanimously approved a quote Monday, May 11th from LL Pelling for a seal coat project on Walton Road from Pleasant Plain Road to the city limits at a total cost of $39,393.
The project was not originally included in the city’s capital improvements plan for the year, but City Engineer Melanie Carlson said the funds are available through an existing in-house work line item that had approximately $175,000 budgeted with money remaining. Final costs will be based on unit prices and actual quantities placed.
A portion of the project — roughly one-third — falls on land technically outside city limits in the county. Rather than coordinating budgets between two entities for what amounts to approximately $13,000, the city opted to cover the full cost. The county agreed in return to handle all pavement marking on both the city and county portions of the road, valued at around $1,000.
Carlson noted that the area is expected to continue growing, with at least one property along the road already having signed a pre-annexation agreement giving the city the right to annex it at a future date. She said the road is not a high county maintenance priority but is important to the city given the anticipated development in the area.
The council did not discuss a specific timeline or completion date for the project during Monday’s meeting. Given that the work involves a seal coat application, which is typically weather-dependent, the final schedule will likely be coordinated between the city and LL Pelling as conditions allow.
