Keota High School and Fairfield’s Maharishi School Qualify for World’s Largest Student Rocket Competition Finals

Two area schools — Keota High School and Maharishi School of Fairfield — have earned spots in the National Finals of the American Rocketry Challenge, the world’s largest student rocket competition, after a record-breaking season that drew 1,107 teams from across the country.

The National Finals will take place on Saturday, May 16th at Great Meadow in The Plains, Virginia, near Washington, D.C. The top 100 qualifying teams will compete for more than $100,000 in awards and the title of National Champion. The winning team will earn the right to represent the United States at the International Rocketry Challenge in July at the Farnborough International Airshow in London. The top 25 finishers will also be automatically eligible for a spot in NASA’s Student Launch Initiative.

To qualify, teams were required to design, build, and launch model rockets engineered to reach an altitude of 750 feet, achieve a flight duration between 36 and 39 seconds, safely carry one raw egg, and return the rocket to the ground intact. At the National Finals, teams will face a new set of flight requirements designed to further test their engineering adaptability and problem-solving skills.

For Keota High School, this marks the first time the school has ever qualified for the event — a significant milestone for the program. The qualifying team consists of ninth and tenth-grade students. Maharishi School has qualified for the past few years.

The American Rocketry Challenge, now in its 24th year, is sponsored by the Aerospace Industries Association, the National Association of Rocketry, and more than 15 industry, government, and academic partners. The program is designed to encourage students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math. Since its founding in 2002, the competition has engaged more than 100,000 students nationwide, and its alumni have gone on to careers across the aerospace industry — including NASA astronaut Warren “Woody” Hoburg, who competed in the very first American Rocketry Challenge National Finals in 2003 and launched into space in 2023 as the pilot of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-6 mission to the International Space Station.

“The American Rocketry Challenge launches not just rockets, but also the careers of the next generation of aerospace innovators,” said Eric Fanning, AIA President and CEO. “Our 100 national finalists have spent the year applying creativity, precision, and teamwork to one of the most demanding STEM competitions in the country. On May 16th, we’ll see their hard work take flight as they compete for the title of National Champion.”
