Muscatine, IA – June 13, 1896
Officer Jacob Neibert, a dedicated member of the Muscatine Police Department, was shot and killed while performing his duties on Saturday. The 53-year-old officer was working to maintain safety in the community when he arrested two men for vagrancy. In a shocking act of violence, the suspects overpowered him, leading to a fatal encounter.
Despite suffering grave injuries, Officer Neibert managed to provide a description of his assailants to fellow officers before succumbing to his wounds. Tragically, while two individuals were taken into custody, they were later released when it was determined they had no connection to the incident. The search for justice continues, as the true culprits behind this senseless act remain unidentified.
Born on July 23, 1842, in Bavaria, Germany, Neibert was a Civil War veteran who served honorably in Company C of Iowa’s 35th Infantry Regiment. After mustering out in 1865, he made Muscatine his home, where he became a respected police officer and an active member of the local community.
Neibert is remembered not only for his service as a law enforcement officer but also for his commitment to his family, leaving behind his wife, Henrietta. His sacrifice has not gone unnoticed; he is memorialized at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., ensuring that his bravery will be remembered for generations to come.
