The Fairfield Trojans volleyball team experienced both highs and lows over their recent four-match stretch, posting a 2-2 record with victories over Carlisle and Grinnell, while suffering narrow defeats to Mount Pleasant in a pair of closely contested matches.
Match 1: Fairfield def. Carlisle 21-17, 21-14
The Trojans opened their stretch with a solid straight-set victory over Carlisle, demonstrating balanced offensive production and exceptional ball control. Natalie Steele paced the attack with 7 kills, Maddy Martin contributed 6 kills, Elyse Setterstrom added 5 kills, and Bella Buckley chipped in 4 kills. Faith Jones orchestrated the offense with 22 assists while the team committed only 7 offensive errors, showcasing excellent execution and decision-making.
The Trojans’ back-row defense was exceptional, recording 50 total digs led by Isabel McCready’s 17 digs. Mallory Wigle added 8 digs and Iris Lane contributed 6 digs to the defensive effort.
Fairfield achieved a perfect 100% team serving efficiency with Faith Jones recording 2 aces and Lexi Mast adding the third and final one.
Match 2: Fairfield def. Grinnell 14-21, 21-19, 16-14
The Trojans showed tremendous resilience in a thrilling three-set victory over Grinnell, bouncing back from a first-set loss to win in dramatic fashion.
Steele led the attack again with 8 kills, Jones and Martin each added 4 kills to the team total, and Jones posted an impressive .667 attacking efficiency. Jones handled the majority of the setting duties with 16 assists, while McCready contributed 4 assists to provide a little changeup to our offense.
The Trojans’ defensive effort was outstanding with 71 total digs. McCready anchored the back row with 23 digs, while Wigle (12), Lane (11), Jones (10, and Mast (9) all made significant contributions as well.
Fairfield committed only 10 offensive errors while maintaining 95.2% serving efficiency, with Iris Lane recording 1 ace.
Match 3: Fairfield lost to Mount Pleasant 9-21, 21-19, 12-15
The first meeting with Mount Pleasant resulted in a heartbreaking three-set loss, with the Trojans falling just short in the decisive third set.
Jones provided 17 assists while Martin led the attack with 6 kills. The Trojans showed balanced scoring with 8 different players recording kills for 22 total kills throughout the three sets. However, the team struggled with ball control in this one, committing 18 offensive errors that proved costly in the tight contest.
Despite the loss, the defensive effort remained strong with 53 total digs. McCready led the way with 12, while Lane and Jones each contributed 10 digs.
Wigle recorded 1 ace as the team posted an 87.9% serving efficiency, the lowest on the day.
Match 4: Fairfield lost to Mount Pleasant 17-21, 21-18, 13-15
The rematch with Mount Pleasant proved equally frustrating, with another three-set loss that came down to the final points.
Jones distributed 21 assists to a balanced attack featuring Leah Helmick and Martin (7 kills each), and Steele (6 kills). Also, 7 different players contributed to the team’s 27 total kills, showing a balanced and deep attack. The Trojans showed better execution this time around with only 12 team offensive errors, a significant improvement from their previous meeting.
The back-row defense contributed its strong play with McCready leading at 15 digs, Lane adding 12, and Jones contributing 11.
While the team recorded no aces, they remained with a solid 94.1% serving efficiency throughout the match, also an improvement from the previous meeting.
Looking Forward
The four-match stretch showcased both the potential and areas for growth for the Fairfield volleyball program. The victories over Carlisle and Grinnell demonstrated the team’s ability to execute at a high level, particularly in ball control and defensive consistency.
The narrow losses to Mount Pleasant, while disappointing, showed the competitive nature of this Trojans squad. The improvement in offensive errors from 18 in the first meeting to 12 in the rematch indicates the team’s ability to adjust and learn from previous performances.
Jones’ consistent playmaking throughout all four matches, combined with the balanced offensive contributions and strong defensive play from McCready and others, provides a solid foundation as the team continues its season. After the first week of the season with six matches, Jones already has 101 assists, Steele leads with 34 kills, and McCready has 80 digs.
