Benton pulled away in the second half to defeat Fairfield 29-12 on Friday night, in a game that followed a strikingly similar script to last season’s 29-14 victory over the Trojans.
For the second consecutive year, Benton found themselves in a competitive first half against Fairfield before taking control after intermission. Last season’s contest saw a 14-14 halftime tie, while this year’s game featured a 14-12 Benton advantage at the break. In both games, the Bobcats shut out Fairfield in the second half to secure decisive victories.
Benton struck first when Carson Nolan capped the opening drive with a 7-yard touchdown run, followed by Drew Ballard’s extra point for a 7-0 lead.
Fairfield responded with an impressive 76-yard scoring drive that consumed most of the first quarter. Starting from their own 24-yard line with 8:51 remaining, the Trojans methodically moved down field before Ethan Bisgard punched it in from 17 yards out with 1:14 left in the quarter. A failed two-point conversion kept Benton ahead 7-6. During that opening series, Fairfield faced a 4th and 1 on their own 33-yard line. They gambled with a quarterback sneak and successfully converted to get a 1st down to continue down the field, which was a key highlight in the drive.
The second quarter saw both teams find the end zone. Nolan connected with Eli Patterson for an 11-yard touchdown pass, with Ballard’s kick extending Benton’s lead to 14-6.
Fairfield answered with another sustained drive, this one covering 81 yards over 6 minutes of play. A 34-yard pass to Blake Burnett highlighted the march, setting up Bisgard’s second touchdown from 10 yards out with 4:04 remaining in the half. Another unsuccessful two-point attempt left Benton with a 14-12 halftime edge.
The third quarter belonged to the Bobcats as Nolan added his second rushing touchdown of the night, powering in from 10 yards out with Ballard’s conversion pushing the lead to 21-12.
Benton sealed the victory in the fourth quarter when Nolan had a 13-yard run to capture his third rushing touchdown in the game. A successful two-point conversion followed to reach the final score of 29-12.
Fairfield generated 285 total yards of offense, including 193 rushing yards. Bisgard led the ground attack with 57 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries, while also contributing 3 catches for 33 yards. Quarterback Voss Richardson managed the offense effectively, completing 6 of 10 passes for 92 yards while adding 43 rushing yards on 9 attempts.
The Trojans’ balanced rushing attack featured contributions from Zandrik Allison (41 yards on 13 carries), Brady Wigle (27 yards on 5 attempts), and Spencer McCready (25 yards on 2 carries).
Defensively for Fairfield, Bisgard recorded a game-high 11.5 tackles in his new role. The junior has transitioned from his sophomore season when he recorded just 29.5 tackles total, moving to linebacker this year to fill the void left by Luke Konczal’s departure. The position change has given Bisgard a significantly more prominent defensive role, as evidenced by his tackle production in the season opener. Tucker Robertson added 4.5 tackles and McCready contributed 4.0 tackles in support.
