Favorable October weather helps Iowa farmer finish harvest

A north-central Iowa farmer is reflecting on a smooth harvest.

Josh Hitzhusen grows corn and soybeans near Rockwell.

“Things went quite well. Corn dried down really fast again this year like it has in years past, which is wild because we sat here all September watching it rain and cool weather wondering if the corn would ever get dry enough to combine. And man, one weekend of 80-some degrees and we lost a lot of moisture fast.”

He tells Brownfield there were a couple rain delays in October.

“And obviously we’re sitting in one now. We’re fortunate enough that we have the crop out, just waiting on some tillage and anhydrous and some of those projects we’d like to get done after harvest. But the big push is kind of behind us.”

Hitzhusen says corn yields were strong, and soybean yields were some of the best he’s had.
