Areas of southwestern Iowa have received heavy rainfall this week.
Ringgold County farmer Tim Creveling tells Brownfield rain totals exceeded eight inches in some fields.
“I’ve got a five-inch rain gauge,” he said. “I dumped it at 7:30 and it was running over. Then I dumped it again this morning and it had another two and a quarter in it. I’ve heard people say upwards of eight or eight and a half (inches).”
He says crop conditions were already favorable before this week’s low-pressure system.
“It was not like we were hurting for moisture. The corn especially looks really good. The beans were kind of struggling along like some of them, but still not hurting.”
Creveling says he doesn’t expect the high rain totals to cause any ponding issues.
“Where we’re at, most of our ground lays rolling enough that ponding won’t be an issue. I think as long as the water goes away here in the next couple days, for the most part, the crops will be fine without too many drowned out spots.”
Creveling raises corn, soybeans, and cattle near Ellston.
